A confidential personal matter was discussed. 4.RISE AND REPORT A motion to rise and report was moved at 5:11 p.m.and carried. RECOMMENDATION: That Bill Tucker be appointed to the position of Director of Education and Secretary of the Board effective 2008 January 01. J.STEWART, Chairperson Chair Sattler announced the appointment of Superintendent Bill Tucker to the position of Director of Education and Secretary of the Board.She commended all the applicants and described Mr. Tucker's background In education noting he has been an employee of the TVDSBfrom its inception in 1998,having worked as an educator for the former London Board of Education since 1979.He was most recently a Superintendent of Education in the Operations Services and Human Resource Services departments.He also held a supervisory position Inthe areas of Special Education and School and Community Services in Program Services.Prior to his supervisory position, Mr.Tucker served as Principal at Locke's,Edward Street,Wilfrid Jury and Churchill Public Schools. Chair Sattler noted that Mr.Tucker has exceptional people skills,educational experience and extensive community-based partnerships.Overtheyears,he has worked in many schools InLondon, Elgin and Oxford and developed a broad base of community contacts across Thames Valley. He has served as President of Madame Vanier Children's Services Board of Directors,been a member on the Governance Committee of the School and Community Intervention Program InElginCounty, Developmental DisabilitiesDivisionAdvisory Committee at Universityof Western Ontario,Community LivingLondon,Board representative for London Children's Connection as well as board member of London and Middlesex Children's Aid Society,Women's Community House,and Second Stage Housing.Chair Sattler concluded her remarks confirming that with Mr.Tucker's appointment,the system's caring, learning community remains invery good hands. She also extended sincere thanks to Acting Director John Thorpe for his patient leadership and dedication during this transition period for the Board.She noted that the Board was very fortunate to be able to start the school year under Director Thorpe's leadership Superintendent Tucker thanked ChairSattler,Trustees,colleagues and responded withthe following comments: "Letme first express my appreciation tothe Board forthe trust and confidence you have placed inmy appointment.1am truly honoured and pleased to accept this position and am excited to serve a system which has been my home away from home for a little over 28 years.Iam here tonight as a parent,as an educator and as an advocate for students.We all share a common goal...all of us as educators,parents,community partners,administrators and support staff: That is, to bring out the best In every student in Thames Valley. Like you, I believe that all students can leam. 2007 November 06...3 Director-elect Comments,cont'd What can be more important than supporting the front line of learning?It is what we have devoted our careers to. And as educators,we give nearly as many hours a day to the development of children and youth as do parents and guardians.We are entrusted with the development of a very special commodity...our future. Itis a job none of us takes lightly.And it is a job which takes a whole team,working together,to accomplish success. From the bus driver to the late night custodian.School secretary to the sports team coach. Teacher to the support staff worker infinance. Printing department to the principalorfromthe parent volunteer to the student leader.It takes allof us. 1am confident that together,working as a Caring, Learning Communitywe will successfully address the challenges and opportunities that our Board will face as we maintain our commitment to improving student learning. I want to take this opportunity tonight to recognize my family,who are here with me tonight. I ' couldnothave gone throughthisprocess without theirsupport...!hopetheyare still as excited one year from now! I wanted to also take this opportunity to express my appreciation to John Thorpe who has been a mentor ofmine since Iworked with himwhen 1was the principal at Wilfrid Jury PublicSchool and he was my superintendent.John,your dedication to serving others and yourincredible commitment to super human response times for voice mails will be hard acts to follow.Thank you for your service to our Board. As we embark on our 10"^year anniversary and begin our second decade as the Thames Valley District School Board, Iam excited about the ride we are about to take together as Thames Valleycontinues to grow as a leader ineducation inOntario.
